The proportion of ball mills was a common problem that troubled people when ball mills were first introduced. Whether the proportion was reasonable directly affects the production efficiency of ball mills and also affects the production quality of ball mills to a certain extent. So, how should we focus on the proportion of ball mills and steel balls? How can we add steel balls to the ball mill in proportion to their size?

Firstly, the steel ball ratio of ball mills in cement plants, mining sites, thermal power plants, and chemical plants should be determined based on factors such as the diameter of the ball mill surface, ore hardness, ore particle size of the ball mill, steel ball hardness (mass), and ball mill speed. After the model of the ball mill is determined, the speed of the ball mill is also set, and the hardness of the ore can be measured. The particle size of the ore in the ball mill is determined by the size of the starting grid sieve. Usually, newly installed ball mills have a running in process, during which the amount of steel balls is added for the first time, accounting for 80% of the maximum ball capacity of the ball mill. The proportion of steel balls added can be based on the size of the steel balls (ф 120mm, ф 100mm, ф 80mm, ф 60mm, ф 40mm). The amount of steel balls added: Different ball mill models have different total ball quantities. For example, MQG1500× 3000 ball mill (processing capacity of 100-150 tons) maximum ball loading capacity of 9.5-1500 tons; 10 tons. The first time adding steel balls, large balls (ф 120mm‐ ф 100mm) account for 30% -40%, medium balls 80mm account for 40% -30%, and small balls (ф 60 and ф 40mm) account for 30%. Why only add 80% of steel balls during the running in process of the ball mill? Because after the ball mill is installed, the teeth of the ball mill need to mesh, and the amount (ore amount) also needs to gradually increase. After the ball mill runs continuously for two or three days, stop the ball mill and check the meshing of the gears. When everything is normal, open the manhole cover of the ball mill and add the remaining 20% of steel balls. After the ball mill starts up and runs normally, the addition of steel balls for each shift is done at a ratio of 3:4:3 (3 for ф 120mm, 4 for ф 100mm, and 3 for ф 80mm).

Note: The addition of small steel balls is only for the first time. Because the reasonable friction generated between steel balls, steel balls and ore, and steel balls and ball mill liners during normal operation of the ball mill will increase wear, resulting in larger ball mills being smaller (ground as medium balls) and medium ball mills being smaller balls. So under normal circumstances, there is no need to add a small ball. The case of adding small balls is when there is no monomer dissociation in the useful mineral particle size, and when the fineness of the grinding machine does not meet the flotation requirements, an appropriate amount of small balls can be added. The steel balls in the ball mill are constantly worn during operation. In order to maintain the ball load filling rate and reasonable ball ratio, and to ensure the stable operation of the ball mill, it is necessary to carry out reasonable ball replenishment to minimize wear and tear. The weight of steel balls added is determined by the quality of the steel balls, which in turn determines the amount of ore consumed per ton. It is best to use new wear-resistant steel balls. The best (high-quality) steel ball addition is calculated based on the amount of ore processed per ton (i.e. adding 0.8kg per ton of ore). Generally, steel balls need to process one ton of ore (1kg— 1.2kg). The proportion of steel balls varies depending on the size and type of ball mill. When the diameter of the ball mill is below 2500mm, the added steel ball sizes are ф 100mm, ф 80mm, and ф 60mm. When the diameter of the ball mill is above 2500, the added steel ball sizes are ф 120mm, ф 100mm, and ф 80mm.
